Thursday, January 05, 2006 / Inaugural GuruForum was a success!

The inaugural GuruForum in December Ô05 was a success. It proved to be precisely what was hoped for: an informal platform where senior like-minded technology professionals could impart knowledge and experience among one another.

We enjoyed the insight of contributors such as one of the enterprise architects from CGI among other high level professionals who touched on matters such as how the roles of the architect have evolved, what is the role of the CIO, who is the true mediator/arbitrator between the business units and the technology units of an organization, and how might one retain talent in what has become an extraordinarily nomadic profession..

Ideas on how to structure future meetings were also discussed, and several exciting topics have been presented as possible guidelines for future meetings. Such topics include:

Information Technology Architecture:
o What is the value of architecture?
o How is architecture delivered today?
o Some visions on how architecture might/should be delivered?
o Definitions of architectural roles, both operational and formal.
o Is one methodology better than another and why? RUP vs. XP vs. Waterfall vs.???

Information Technology & Business Visioning:
o How can/do CIO's implement/influence the overall business vision?
o Are corporations being driven by technology instead of true business planning? Is this good/bad/neutral?
o Are corporations implementing technology solutions as a "me too"
initiative instead of a clear business value proposition?

The role of the Information Technology consultant:
o The "valued advisor" v.s. the "contract labourer"?
o What is the appropriate level of business contact for a consultant? (i.e.,
CxO/Director/VP/Line-Manager)

The future of The Internet:
o Can a "public commons" internet continue to co-exist with a "secure business" internet?
o Technologies that might enable different networks for different purposes.

The next meeting will occur during the last week of January or the first week of February. We look forward to sharing a beer, juice, or wine over some stimulating discussion with existing and members to be.

For the time-being membership costs you nothing but an open mind, a willingness to share ideas with peers, and readiness to contribute in the evolution and maturation of the GuruForum.

Please stay tuned for our next meeting. If you are interested in being notified of when our next meeting will take place, please email the office manager: vivian@gurulink.ca
